A group of persons is attempting to ensure K. Mathivanan is appointed as Chairman of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) at the next election held to appoint office bearers to the cricket board, reports say.

They are attempting to ensure the victory of Mathivanan with the blessings of President Maithripala Sirisena, reports add.

Mathivanan, a former Vice President of the SLC Executive Committee, resigned over political pressures.

He is referred to as 'Mr. Clean' of local cricket administration.

Earlier, it was reported that SLC secretary Nishantha Ranatunga had pressurised Mathivanan to resign through Namal Rajapaksa, son of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Reports further cited that Mathivanan resigned after being dejected over this situation.

Mathivanan was a popular choice for the post of Vice-President at the 2013 Sri Lanka Cricket elections where he received the most number of votes received by an individual.

Mathivanan, also functioned as the Chairman of the Colts Cricket Club. but had resigned. He was succeeded by Nishantha Ranatunga as the CCC Chairman.

The SLC elections, scheduled to be held on April 30, will see Nishantha Ranatunga, current SLC chairman Jayantha Dharmadasa and former SLC Chairman Thilanga Sumathipala also contesting for the top position of the Board.
