CMC's abandoned roots

CMC's abandoned roots

Bearing marks of the passing years, the old Town Hall building still stands tall near the Colombo Gas Works Junction.

The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) was established in 1865, 15 years after British Parliament decided to establish a Municipal Council in Sri Lanka.

However, the CMC was shifted to the present new Town Hall premises next to the Viharamaha Devi Park, due to lack of space.

The old premises continued to age as it is used as a Trade Center while the Fire Brigade is using the ground floor.

A section of the building also houses a slice of the CMC history ; old CMC vehicles, and equipment left unprotected.
