Arms find may hit plans for disarmament

Arms find may hit plans for disarmament Featured

The accidental discovery of an arms cache comprising of three parcels of TNT and a suicide jacket, from a house at Chavakachcheri in Jaffna on Wednesday, may hinder the demilitarisation of the Northern Province, newindianexpress.com reports.

Demilitarisation was one of the major post-war demands of Sri Lankan Tamils and was promised to the UN Human Rights Council by the government headed by President Maithripala Sirisena.

Meanwhile, prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said a special statement will be made in parliament next week with regard to the finding of the arms cache.

It was wrong for G.L. Peiris to say a certain group in Wellawatte was linked to the arms cache, especially at a time when the nation was being reconciled, said the PM yesterday (31) at the opening of a new building complex for the finance ministry.

Finding weapons in the postwar period was not a sign of a recurrence of war, he said, noting that weapons used during the Second World War were still being found.

The motive of such remarks was to sabotage the development taking place in the country, he charged, adding that there would be no room for a war in the country again.
