Amended Code of Criminal Procedure to go tough on racism

Amended Code of Criminal Procedure to go tough on racism

Former minister Mervyn Silva says he fears that the new amendments made to the Code of Criminal Procedure could hamper lectures, influencing and propaganda with regard to the Dharmapala Chinthana.

He was speaking to 'Sri Lanka Mirror' on the activities of the 'Dharmapala Piliwetha' organisation, of which he is President.

The amendment, which was tabled before parliament on Dec. 11, proposes a punishment 'with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to two years' for 'attempts to instigate, acts of violence or religious, racial or communal disharmony, or feelings of ill-will or hostility between communities or different racial or religious groups.'
