Strike called off following premier’s statement! Featured

Following the special statement made by prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in parliament today (14), most trade unions have announced that they have abandoned the planned strike action tomorrow.

At a media briefing a short while ago, the government, semi-government and private sector trade unions alliance said they have suspended the union action.

The Lanka private bus owners association and railway trade unions too, announced likewise.

LPBO president Gemunu Wijeratne said the decision was prompted by the favourable responses to their demands including a reduction in the vehicle emission test certificate fee.

The Lanka trade unions centre president K.D. Lalkantha too, said they would not strike tomorrow.

However, trade unions in the banking sector are yet to announce whether they would go ahead with the strike or cancel it.

Postal trade unions said they would not carry out a work stoppage although they could not agree with the PM’s statement.
