The government has failed to provide the children of this country a quality education which is fair to all following sustainable education goals, stated the education development collective comprising around 60 civil society organisations.
Grave collapse
Issuing a statement to mark World Children’s Day the education development collective said, “due to the special treatment of a selected few schools, a grave inequalities have developed in the education field.”
Civil society organisations point out that under this situation, certain rural schools which have been deprived of even their basic facilities are facing the danger of being closed down.
They claim that due to the severe corruption that is taking place within the education sector and the discrepancies that take place in the teacher recruitment process, the education sector in the country is facing a huge collapse.
Against the Charter:
The government’s failure to focus their attention of private schools that function without proper standards, is another factor that is contributing to the downfall of the education sector in Sri Lanka, pointed out the education development organisations.
While this situation is certainly not conducive to a child’s world, it is also in violation of the United Nations Children’s Rights Charter, they claim.
