The FCID is investigating the alleged corrupt activities of a personal secretary to a powerful minster.

The probe is pursuant to a complaint by the prime minister’s office and on the instructions of the IGP.

The PM’s office has received information that the personal secretary, a young woman, has defrauded millions of rupees in the issuance of licenses for vehicles assembled locally.

The FCID has summoned and questioned her several times, and her father, connected to vehicle business, is to be arrested shortly, say police headquarters sources.

Missing documents
Meanwhile, COPA says the documents pertaining to more than 500 vehicles had gone missing from the Department of Motor Traffic.

Chairman of the committee Lasantha Alagiyawanne has told BBC Sandeshaya that this gave rise to suspicion that many irregularities had taken place in the department.

He blamed these irregularities to an absence of an IT link between the customs and the department to share information.
