Railway boss still at work despite suspension!

Railway boss still at work despite suspension! Featured

Despite being suspended by the State Administration Ministry over serious financial irregularities allegations, the Railway Department Additional General Manager (Administration) Hemantha Gamage was seen at work in his office yesterday (02), according to  Railway Workers Union sources.

Currently there is an ongoing court case on charges levelled against him.

Prior to this occasion this person was remanded for two weeks, but during that period there was no suspension or interdiction.

Despite the delay, the State Administration Ministry had informed the Railway Department on August 31 of the suspension order against Gamage.

Therefore the Railway Union points out that Gamage is currently engaging in administrative functions despite the suspension order and this is posing a serious threat as he could displace the incriminating files against him and also use his access to take revenge on those opposing him.

Selling of machines meant for the underprivileged:

The court case against Hemantha Gamage currently is on allegations that he had sold a stock of sewing machines meant to be distributed among the underprivileged in Colombo and pocketed the money, during the period he served as the Colombo district Charity Commissioner.

He had served two weeks in remand custody over this incident, during his tenure as the Railway Department Additional General Manager.

Upon his return having served two weeks in custody, he had informed the staff that he had been on special leave.

Having learnt of the prison term, the General Manager, Railways had relieved Hemantha Gamage of his official duties and sought senior directives in this regard.

However, due to the mediation of the Secretary, State Administrative Ministry at the time, J. Dadellage, the GM was forced to allow  Gamage to continue in his post as the Additional General Manager (Administration).

According to the State employment code  XLVIII paragraph 27-9, the said officer should have either been suspended or sent on compulsory leave. But it took a very long period for this action to be implemented.

However even after a considerable delay in implementing the regulations of the department, the said officer is still functioning in his position on September 2, despite the suspension order being served on August 31.
