The government does not expect any petty political gains through the arrest of MP Namal Rajapaksa, and the allegations against him are proven beyond doubt by the confession made before a magistrate by Namal’s closest friend, PABC bank chairman and Royal Ceramics managing director Wannawatte Waduge Nimal Perera, says deputy minister Ajith P. Perera.

His arrest has been made based on 100 per cent legal documents, he told the media yesterday (13).

Society is unaware of the process that led to Namal’s arrest, the first complaint against him was made by Voice against Corruption convener Wasantha Samarasinghe on 26 December 2015, who has no any connection with the UNP.

The related B report is first submitted on 03 January 2016, second on 12 January, third on January 19, fourth on February 01 and the last one on February 19, and based on the final report, he was arrested.

Investigations show Namal is connected to a Rs. 70 million fraud involving Krrish Group. That company has deposited, at Namal’s request, the said money at Nimal Perera’s HSBC bank accounts.

Nimal has said Namal had obtained his personal bank account numbers from him, and later withdrew the money on two different occasions. All these have been told before courts.

When the FCID questioned Namal for what purpose the money had been accepted, he admitted receiving the money and said he gave them for the 2013 Super Sevens rugby tournament. However, all organizers of the tournament denied using the said money for the development of the game. None of those are supporters of the present government.

On July 11, the FCID arrested Namal on charges of criminal breach of trust, misuse and fraud as he could not explain as to what had happened to the money.

The Krrish Group has given a statement expressing displeasure over the abuse of the money it had given.

Evidence has been recorded, referred to the attorney general and the suspect arrested in accordance with the laws of the country. The courts will decide whether Namal is guilty or not.

There was no pressure on the investigators, and they should be commended for their courageous work, the deputy minister added.
