134 unaccounted for in Aranayake Featured

One hundred and thirty four persons are still unaccounted for following the landslide at Aranayake, said the officer in charge of rescue operations, Maj. Gen. Sundantha Ranasinghe.

He has told BBC Sandeshaya that more than 1,140 displaced were being sheltered in four temporary camps.

The bodies of 20 dead from the landslides at Elangapitiyakanda in Aranayake and Kalupahanakanda in Bulathkohupitiya were found by yesterday afternoon, said director general of the Disaster Management Centre, Maj. Gen. L.M.R. Mark.

Rescue and relief services were continuing with the support of more than 200 soldiers, police and relief teams, he said.

At Elangapitiyakanda, 1,041 people were rescued and were sent to five temporary camps, he said.

Meanwhile, president Maithripala Sirisena was in Aranayake yesterday afternoon looking into the welfare of those affected.
