Minister Kiriella was responding to a question raised by MP Dinesh Gunewardena in Parliament today (17).
The proposed amendment preventing statements that invoke racism was opposed by civil organisations.
In a joint statement, they say that there is no need to bring in new laws to make 'hate speech' a crime and that prevailing laws are capable of addressing that need.
