Former Navy commander Admiral Somatilake Dissanayake has been summoned to appear before a presidential commission today (04) for an inquiry on Rakna Lanka security firm.
Also, Admirals Jayantha Perera and Jayanath Colombage, also ex-Navy chiefs, have been asked to be present at the commission on November 06 and 09 respectively.

The presidential commission is investigating alleged irregularities at Rakna Lanka, including its arms deals.

Weapons sold to 27 firms
When contacted, a former head of Rakna Lanka said they had legally sold T-56 weapons to Avant Garde and 26 other private security firms.

When Chandrika Kumaratunga was the president, an act to regulate private security firms was introduced in 1998, and it empowered the defence secretary to consider requests by more than 3,000 such firms and decide the kinds and quantities of weapons they could be issued with, he said.

Accordingly, former defence secretaries M.M. Junaid, Chandrananda de Silva and Thilak Ranaviraja had given approval to sell firearms to the Wildlife Department, CEB and the Petroleum Corporation, said the ex-chief.

During the Rajapaksa regime, Rakna Lanka was established under the Defence Ministry and automatic weapons had been sold to 27 firms legally, he added.
