Chen, who was a bronze medalist in London four years ago, dispatched Karunaratne in 40 minutes.
Karunaratne’s next match will be against Kevin Cordón of Guatemala on Saturday at 4 a.m., and then Adrian Dziółko on Saturday at 4:55 p.m.

Sri Lankan shuttler Niluka Karunaratne lost his first game in Group P of the men’s badminton tournament, going down in straight sets to Chinese world number 2 Chen Long 21-07, 21-10 at the Rio Olympics.
