In the second Test between Sri Lanka and Australia at Galle, Herath dismissed Adam Voges, Peter Nevill and Mitchell Starc in back-to-back deliveries.
Voges was dismissed by Herath, getting caught at covers by Dimuth Karunaratne. After that, Peter Nevill was trapped leg before. The hat-trick wicket was of Mitchell Starc.
Initially, umpire had adjudged him not-out for lbw, but after Sri Lanka asked for a review, the replays showed the ball hitting the stumps. The only other Sri Lankan to achieve this feat was Nuwan Zoysa in 1999 against Zimbabwe.
