With the request of the party and the blessings of the leadership I am prepared to come forward as the Presidential candidate, Chairman of the UNP leadership council – Karu Jayasuriya has said.He was responding to a query raised by the 'Irida Divaina' newspaper on whether Jayasuriya was prepared to accept the challenge of becoming the Presidential candidate, if he was invited or pressured by multiple parties including the Maha Sangha.

Speaking further, Jayasuriya has said the follows :

“Challenges are nothing new to me. I have faced many challenges. If there is any task that I should undertake, I will consider it at this juncture. I have no intention of demanding that I should be named candidate or to initiate a clash in order to obtain it, because I have never obtained positions in that manner.

"If I am to come forward as Presidential candidate, I would want the party approval and the blessings of the leadership. All positions I have held within the party so far have been obtained in this manner. Also, I must discuss this at length with my family and obtain their approval as well."
