The loss was exposed during the questioning of heads of Lak Sathosa and CWE about the deals struck during the previous regime, COPE chairman Sunil Handunnetti says.
Approval was given to import 50,000 mt of rice, but a much higher amount was imported.
A surcharge of Rs. 01 billion had to be paid during Customs clearance and a kilo was sold at Rs. 38, although the previously-decided price was Rs. 69 per kilo.
