Pettah Rice trader defaults Rs. 380 million to Sathosa

A rice importer in Pettah is said to owe Sathosa Rs. 380 million in dues and it has been revealed that an officer attached to the Industrial Development Ministry and an advisor to Sathosa are attempting to cover up particulars related to the transactions.

It is also reliably learnt that the said businessman is an uncle of a member of parliament.

Sri Lanka Mirror was informed that although the FCID had on many occasions attempted to summon the said businessman for investigation, the MP had stepped in and prevented it through his high level government connections.

Lanka Sathosa had paid the said businessman Rs. 1.5 billion in advance for the import of the stock of rice.

It is believed that due to the businessman flouting the conditions of the agreement between Sathosa and the importer, Sathosa has incurred a loss of over R. 2 billion.

The loss was revealed through the investigations conducted into this transaction by a five member committee.

Audit report missing

While the five member committee investigating the issue had commenced their investigations in March, by July this year they had handed over the report to the Sathosa Chairman. The report that was then handed over to the Industrial Development Ministry has now gone missing.
