Cabinet paper against AG!

Cabinet paper against AG! Featured

Four government ministers are going to seek cabinet approval next week for fresh action with regard to the completed CID and FCID investigations into bribery, corruption and other crimes, and the files of which are now with the Attorney General’s Department.

Patali Champika Ranawaka, Arjuna Ranatunga, Rajitha Senaratne and Karunaratne Paranawithana will submit the relevant cabinet paper.

Forty two files have been handed over to the AG’s department to file court action.

The incumbent president and the government came to power with promises to curb bribery, corruption and crime, and to punish the guilty.

However, it is now clear that offenders are having deals with the present administration or are escaping the accusations against them.

Civil society movements that contributed to the formation of the new government have repeatedly expressed their displeasure to the president and the prime minister over this situation.

AG under pressure

However, AG’s Department sources say no legal action could be taken due to pressure from the top political authority.

The most recent case in point is the CID’s inability to arrest magistrate Thilina Gamage despite an arrest order issued by the AG on May 12 over charges of keeping a baby elephant without a license.
