The attorney general informed the Colombo magistrate’s court today (12) that an investigation was underway into top police officers who had covered up investigations into the murder of rugger player Wasim Thajudeen, BBC Sandeshaya reports.

The state counsel representing the AG told the court that statements have already been recorded from more than 20 police officers.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Medical Council informed the magistrate that charge sheets have been handed over and an inquiry underway against former Colombo chief JMO Dr. Ananda Samarasekara and others who stand accused of not having properly performed the first postmortem examination into Thajudeen’s death.

The court ordered the SLMC to submit its report.

Lawyer for Inspector Sumith Perera, who is in remand custody in connection with the case, requested bail for his client, but the state counsel objected, citing ongoing investigations into the top police officers involved.

Noting possible disruptions to the investigation if Perera was given bail, the magistrate rejected the bail application, and remanded him further until May 26.
