4 more 'Transformers' films are on the way

Were you hoping that we had entered the "Age of Extinction" for "Transformers" movies?

We have some disheartening news to report. More "Transformers" movies are on their way. Four more.

Stephen J. Davis, the head of Hasbro Studios, said at a Q&A during the Mipcom conference in Cannes, France, that the fifth through ninth "Transformers" movies will be released over the next 10 years. Davis explained that the movies' plots have already been mapped out by a team of writers led by Akiva Goldsman, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of "A Beautiful Mind."

The directors of the new movies have are still unknown; Michael Bay, who directed the first four, has not yet signed on to the fifth, which is being written by Goldsman.

We really shouldn't be surprised that Hasbro is working on so many more sequels. The first four movies in the franchise grossed nearly $3.8 billion worldwide, among the most of any franchise ever. Though domestic box office receipts have sunk considerably since 2009's "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," the movies' foreign haul grows larger with each installment. The most recent movie, "Transformers: The Age of Extinction," pulled in a whopping $320 million from China alone -- more than any other movie released in 2014.
