The government plans to cover the entire country with a 4G network through the use of Google’s Project Loon.

The TRC has taken steps to release by November the signal range for this purpose.

Minister Harin Fernando told Sri Lanka Mirror that the delay in implementing the plans was not due to any issue with the Google balloons, but because it took time to obtain the signal range from the TRC.

1,500 free wi-fi zones

Meanwhile, all technical issues with regard to establishing 1,500 free wi-fi zones by 2017 have now been resolved.

Plans are there to establish 300 such zones by October, and 500 zones by November.
